Purple Drank

Purple drank also known as lean and or sizzurp, was initially commercialized in the southern hip-hop culture. But today, Toronto’s inner city communities are encountering a purple drank epidemic. The lethal cough syrup which contains high levels of codeine is typically mixed with soda (sprite and or mountain dew), and candy (jolly rancher). When ingested, purple drank gives its user a woozy, euphoric feeling. The excessive concentration of codeine in purple drank is proven to overpower the central nervous system leading to respiratory arrest, heart failure and or seizures.

The following are some effects of purple drank:

  • Slurred speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Euphoria
  • Sedation
  • Dissociation from one’s body
  • Impaired motor skills
  • Lethargy
  • Drowsiness
